📋 Tender Overview

The high level of donation activity and organ transplantation in 2024 resulted in an increase in the number of air operations almost twice those carried out a decade ago.
The organ and organ transplant activity in Spain marked a new record last year. With a daily average of eight donors and 17 transplants aerial operations constituted a fundamental piece to achieve difficult figures for any other country in the world. The National Transplant Organization (ONT) managed in 2024 a total of 1040 air operations for transplantation a historical maximum that practically doubles the number of operations carried out a decade ago andn our country. This follows from the report that the ONT has just published which recognizes the essential role of airports and airlines in the Spanish donation and transplant program. (262). A fact that is directly related ton the 30% increase in pulmonary transplant procedures that the ONT recorded in 2024. The rest of the organs that were transported by air often for the transplant of patients in zero emergency patients were 300 higados 191 hearts 25 pancreas and 5 multivisceral transplants. With regard to the kidney the most transplanted organ last year 376 were transferred by air. Of these 135 (36%) were allocated to the transplant of highly sensitized patients (COn Great difficulties in transplanting for immunological reasons) within the Pathi program of the ONT created specifically for these patients. The crew responsible for guarding the organ with respect to transfers the custody of the organ by the crew of the plane remains the most frequent although the transfer of the organ with the medical team also grew in 2024. In this way last year 556 (51%) organs transported by air were collected and transferred by LOn the crew of the plane without any sanitary traveling with them. The 534 (49%) remaining organs were transferred with the responsible medical team. In the case of the kidneys the transfer by air is always carried out in regular flight in charge of the crew being an organ that resists louder times of cold ischemia. Spanish airports thanks to the collaboration with Aena remain a key link for the program and its full disposition to collaborate with the ONT PTo develop operations effectively is essential for the transplant activity to continue to grow. In 2024 airports intervened 2385 occasions in the different operations carried out. Again Madrid-Barajas airport was the one that registered the greatest activity with 522 interventions which represents 22% of the total. The following airport in number of operations was that of Barcelona with 427 interventions. In these procedures the cooperation of the personnel of whatS Spanish airports is fundamental. To facilitate transplant operations last year the ONT coordination team requested the extension of airport schedule on 279 occasions. The Murcia airport stands out which extended its schedule on 35 occasions as well as that of Seville which did it 26 times followed by the airports of Cordoba and La Coruna which extended it on 24 and 22 times respectively. In addition on 21 occasions the extraordinary opening ofAirports for organ transfer once they had closed. It highlights the availability of Badajoz airport which was requested that extraordinary opening up to eight times. The frequency of extraordinary opening application for airports remains stable in recent years while there hasIigidos to Spanish transplant hospitals for which the participation of foreign airports was necessary. Portuguese airports are the ones that intervened most frequently. Specifically the Porto did so on 17 occasions Faro in five and Lisbon in four others all in the context of the collaboration agreement for the exchange of organs that Spain maintains with the Portuguese country.024 in 310 (30%) occasions were commercial companies and 710 (70%) of private companies. With the increase in the activity of donation and organ transplantation of recent years this collaboration is essential. Atlantic Initium and Cnair are private companies with the greatest activity. Collaboration with commercial companies becomes indispensable in many of the air transfers and contributes to the sustainability of the National Transplant Program. The ONT thanks the collaborationDisinterested ion of the Vueling Iberia Air Europa Iberia Express and Air Nostrum airlines that for free allow the transport of organs on their commercial flights.
