📋 Tender Overview
The emblematic work of the Transportation sector is consolidated as a milestone of road engineering in the country and in the worldThe Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) reported that the Ollachea Tunnel, located in the district of Ollachea, province of Carabaya, Puno region, was recognized with the Guinness World Records, in the category Highest-temperature geothermal waters traversed by a vehicular tunnel, becoming a unique infrastructure worldwide.
This international recognition was granted after, during the technical measurement process for certification, a maximum temperature of 71.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in the geothermal waters present in the tunnel environment, an extreme geological condition that represented one of the greatest engineering challenges during its execution.
Strategic infrastructure for the south of the country
The Ollachea Tunnel is part of the IIRSA South highway - Section 4: Inambari-Azangaro Bridge, and runs between kilometers 232 and 233 of this important road that connects the Puno region with the south of the country. The intervention extends over 1,024 meters, which includes 906 meters of tunnel, in addition to 33 meters of access at the entrance and 85 meters of access at the exit. The work required an approximate investment of 100 million dollars and is managed by the General Directorate of Transportation Programs and Projects of the MTC.
Construction in extreme geological conditions
During the detailed engineering and execution stage, temperatures close to 70 degC were identified, due to the presence of thermal waters. To mitigate these effects, specialized waterproofing, structural coating and rigid pavement processes were implemented, in addition to security measures aimed at protecting personnel and guaranteeing the stability of the infrastructure.
Technology, security and modern operation
The Ollachea Tunnel has a comprehensive electromechanical system, aligned with the Roads - Tunnels Manual and current electrical and safety regulations. It has high-power LED lighting, managed by automated systems with industrial controllers; mechanical ventilation to control smoke and contaminants; fire and gas detection systems; CCTV, public address system and evacuation signage.
The infrastructure offers a comprehensive solution to mobility challenges in the mountain area, strengthening the connection of the Puno region with the markets and ports of the Peruvian coast.
With the Ollachea Tunnel, the MTC reaffirms its vision of promoting works that integrate the country, strengthen regional competitiveness and contribute to economic and social development, positioning Peru as a benchmark in infrastructure engineering at an international level.
