Odyssey Energy Solutions has announced a significant fundraising effort, securing 74 million to enhance financing for distributed renewable energy companies, particularly across emerging markets like Africa. This initiative involves 27 million in equity and 47 million in debt, aimed at providing much-needed working capital to small and midsize developers and installers who often face cash flow challenges.
Addressing the Financing Gap
Distributed energy companies in Africa frequently struggle to obtain financing due to a mismatch between the timing of costs and revenues. Many need to invest in equipment such as solar panels and inverters upfront, but only receive payment after project completion. Odysseys new funding will help bridge this gap by offering pre-construction capital, a necessity that traditional banks often fail to meet.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), distributed energy solutions in sub-Saharan Africa received only 870 million in investor commitments in 2023, highlighting a significant funding shortfall. Odyssey aims to address this by expanding its innovative financing model, which has already seen success in Nigeria with a 100 million solar equipment financing agreement.
Expanding Market Reach
Odyssey plans to extend its financing solutions beyond Nigeria to other emerging markets, using the newly raised funds to scale operations. The goal is to alleviate the financial constraints faced by thousands of small and midsize engineering, procurement, and construction companies, thus enabling them to execute projects and unlock customer payments more efficiently.
This development marks a substantial step forward in mobilizing capital for decentralized energy companies, which are crucial for increasing energy access and promoting sustainable development in regions with limited grid infrastructure.
