In 2025, the Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympiad (Obmep) celebrates twenty editions of the countrys largest scientific competition with a historic milestone. The 20th OBMEP will arrive in 57,222 schools of 5,566 municipalities - ensuring coverage of 99.93% of cities in the country, the largest number of educational institutions and municipalities registered since the creation of the Olympics. This year, the competition will bring together 18.6 million students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school and private institutions. Promoted by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), social organization linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, OBMEP was created in 2005 and is carried out with resources from MCTI and the Ministry of Education (MEC). In addition to stimulating the learning of mathematics, the Olympics reveals young talents and acts in promoting social inclusion through knowledge. Other public universities, such as USP (University of Sao Paulo) and Unicamp (State University of Campinas), have also adopted the Olympic vacancies system, intended for students with good performance in these competitions. As in recent years, the medals granted not only recognize the talent of students, but also open doors for higher education, and can be used as a criterion of entry into several institutions, said the director-Adjunto. The result is expected to be released in December, on the 22nd. Those who are awarded national gold, silver or bronze medals guarantee a place in the Jr. Scientific Initiation Program (PIC), which offers advanced math classes and a CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) scholarship for public school students.
