📋 Tender Overview
The cable breaks in the Baltic Sea are very disturbing, especially in light of the fact that there have been several similar incidents recently. It is difficult to imagine that such repeated cable breaks with anchors from civilian ships could be accidental, says Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide. I am in close contact with my Finnish and Estonian colleagues, as well as with our other allies around the Baltic Sea.
The situation affects us as neighbors and close allies. It is good that the Finnish and Estonian authorities have taken necessary and effective investigative steps. Both we and our allies see an increase in serious, hybrid incidents in our areas.
This is a serious development that threatens our common security and requires increased cooperation on both monitoring, preparedness and protection of critical infrastructure, also through NATO. There is also agreement that we must step up measures against the Russian shadow fleet, which transports oil from Russia in violation of international sanctions. Norway will continue our close cooperation with our allies to protect critical infrastructure in the region, and to ensure safe maritime transport in our immediate vicinity.
