How do we prevent young people from falling out of school and working life or that District Norway becomes an old peoples home Some societal challenges such as young exclusion and an aging population are so complex that we need completely new solutions. The government and KS will now collaborate on a new policy lab that will accelerate innovation in the municipal sector.Major societal challenges such as young exclusion and an aging population are so complex that we must think completely new in order to find accurate and sustainable solutions. Therefore the government will support KS with NOK 5 million for further work on a policy lab. The goal is to uncover unnecessary obstacles to good solutions through more experimental forms of work and get new and better input for policy development says Minister of Local Government and Modernization Nikolai Astrup.We must find new ways to prevent exclusion before young people fall outside. We must create good conditions for growing up while the children are still children not afterwards. We must create sustainable local environments and dignified elderly care while we still have time for alternative measures. It is therefore important to develop working methods where we together manage to change our systems quickly enough says chairman of the board of KS Bjrn Arild Gram.Changes in public policy instruments and policies are often long processes and the way we work with them today is not always flexible or good enough. A broad-based policy lab will be a laboratory that can experiment with better and faster results. For example it could be looking with new eyes at laws and regulations that hinder the development of new and more sustainable solutions or actively trying out how we can remove the root causes that prevent us from solving tasks in new and more innovative ways.In order for us to include more it is necessary for the public sector to renew and improve. Then we must dare to think new to find sustainable and future-oriented solutions for people says Astrup.KS has started a pilot project that gathers international experience and develops a concept for a policy lab based on the needs of the municipal sector. Government actors contribute to the concept development.In June KS and the Ministry of Local Government and Modernization entered into a co-operation agreement on innovation and the sustainability goals in the public sector. I am pleased that this collaboration is further developed with a policy lab that will strengthen our joint work with innovation and sustainability says Astrup.
