A new water infrastructure will allow up to 1,600,000 cubic meters of water to be stored to supply the Costa Azul-La Floresta water treatment plant. The work, executed by OSE after an investment of close to 100,000,000 pesos, is completed and is going through the stage of technical inspections prior to its final acceptance.
OSE entered the final phase of the dam project on the Sarandí stream, a strategic work aimed at strengthening the drinking water supply system on the Gold Coast and increasing water security in the area.
The infrastructure, located between the towns of Piedras de Afilar and Capilla de Cella, will allow up to 1,600,000 cubic meters of water to be stored to supply the Costa Azul-La Floresta water treatment plant, which will benefit thousands of users in the east of Canelones.
A strategic reserve to guarantee water supply
The dam, 10.5 meters high, generates a body of water of about 60 hectares on land expropriated by OSE. The new reserve constitutes a key tool to ensure the availability of raw water for purification.
Its incorporation will allow the supply to be reinforced during periods of high demand and provide a more robust response to eventual supply difficulties, which increases the reliability and resilience of the system.
The work integrates the investments promoted by OSE to strengthen water infrastructure and guarantee access to drinking water in different regions of the country.
Future connection with the water treatment plant
In a later stage, the construction of a pipeline is planned that will directly connect the reservoir with the Costa Azul-La Floresta water treatment plant.
Meanwhile, the design of the infrastructure allows the water to arrive naturally through the channel of the Sarandí stream itself and ensure the functioning of the system from the beginning of operations.
Technology and security for efficient management of water resources
The dam was designed to operate safely and efficiently. It includes two pipes that cross its body: one intended for water intake and another that functions as a minimum level spillway.
Likewise, it incorporates a spillway with maximum capacity to evacuate surpluses during episodes of intense rain, which guarantees the stability of the infrastructure and the correct functioning of the reservoir.
As a complement, it has two operating chambers located on both sides, which allow the flow of water to be regulated using shut-off valves.
The work also incorporates level measurement systems that make it possible to permanently monitor the level of the reservoir and estimate the volume of stored water, which facilitates more efficient management of the water resource.
