The bicycle tunnel on the Zwolse Hessenweg was officially opened on 17 May. Danou Veenhof regional director at ProRail deputy Bert Boerman of the province of Overijssel alderman Gerdien Rots of the municipality of Zwolle and Andr van der Vegt regional director at Dura Vermeer were the first to cycle through the tunnel today. The four drivers also revealed the name of the tunnel the Hessen tunnel.More safety for both bicycles and trainsThe tunnel replaces the level crossing on the Hessenweg. This busy level crossing was closed for fifteen minutes every hour. The new tunnel ensures a smooth and safe crossing of the railway. During the works bicycle traffic was diverted over the railway viaduct for car traffic which is located a little further north. In 2018 the N340 between Zwolle and Ommen was given a new route. Car traffic can now safely cross the railway via a new viaduct. The old Hessenweg has been given a different layout. The Hessenweg is now part of the F340 cycle highway which runs from Zwolle via Dalfsen to Ommen. Deputy Bert Boerman is pleased that cyclists can now also use a safe underpass at the railway The Hessentunnel ensures that cyclists can pass under the railway safely and smoothly. This will make the bicycle highway even more attractive and we would like to stimulate that.Alderman Gerdien Rots calls the Hessentunnel an asset to the municipality of Zwolle To make cycling in Zwolle and the region comfortable faster and safer we are working together to optimize the cycling network and research smart cycling innovations. This new bicycle tunnel is a good example of this. The new tunnel provides a fast and safe cycling route from Zwolle to Ommen. In the summer of 2023 cyclists will be able to safely cross the Zwolle-Meppel railway line.
