Health insurers in the Netherlands are looking for a strategic buyer for expensive medicines and a policy supporter for expensive medicines. Health insurers have a social duty to keep healthcare affordable and to promote equal access for all insured persons in the Netherlands. The Expensive Medicines team works in close collaboration with health insurers to improve the accessibility affordability and quality of expensive medicines. To this end health insurers set up a joint purchasing organization Clean team in 2017 that makes agreements with pharmaceutical companies about the price of new expensive medicines. The Clean Team is a multidisciplinary team of health insurers in which both content experts and purchasing specialists participate.Strategic purchaserThe strategic purchaser of expensive drugs is a member of the Clean team has thorough knowledge of the drug market and is able to translate this into effective negotiation strategies. He or she works on a tactical and strategic level with medical advisors and health care purchasers from all health insurers and knows how to bring together different perspectives and angles. Policysupporter The policy supporter for expensive medicines supports the Clean team on executive matters from ZN. He or she also does this for the Add-on Medicines Assessment Committee. Medical advisers and advising pharmacists from health insurers who sit on this committee assess new expensive medicines test them against the state of science and practice and promote the quality and efficiency of care.
