RetinaScope BV a start-up based in Purmerend has received a convertible loan of 150000 from the Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland.With this financing the company is further developing a portable camera that can be used in eye examinations. RetinaScope collaborates with TNO in this project.Diagnosis in remote areasThe camera complements the existing instruments for eye examinations in particular the more expensive table models such as those used in hospitals and care centers. Due to the relatively low price of the RetinaScope it will be possible to tackle the early eye examination on a larger scale especially in patients with type 2 diabetes. This will save hundreds of thousands of people worldwide from visual impairment and blindness. Due to the simplicity and relatively low cost of the camera healthcare providers and patients in rural areas worldwide can also benefit from it. TNOs technological knowledge and the market experience of the RetinaScope team provide a good basis for a successful project. The North Holland Innovation Fund is an initiative of the province of North Holland the University of Amsterdam the Hogeschool van Amsterdam Amsterdam UMC and Sanquin with the support of the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund. The Fund supports entrepreneurs in the province of North Holland with financing innovation in the phase of proof of concept. The Fund provides convertible loans.
