π Tender Overview
In Bunnik a speed camera has been placed at the level crossing on the Achterdijk. This is done to increase safety on the level crossing. The camera registers road users who ignore the red flashing lights and barriers.Trial without finesThis is a test to demonstrate that the camera works properly and that it correctly registers road users who commit the error. It only concerns vehicles with a license plate. No fines will be issued during the trial. After the test the camera remains standing. The trial is a collaboration between ProRail the municipality of Bunnik and in coordination with the Public Prosecution Service.Life-threatening actionsToo often motorists moped and motorcyclists and truck and bus drivers drive over a railway crossing when the red flashing lights flash and the barriers close. In order to put a stop to these kinds of life-threatening actions ProRail in collaboration with the Public Prosecution Service will place speed cameras at railway crossings. Road users who do not comply with the traffic rules here can always expect a fine.Previous trial in HilversumIn 2018 ProRail in collaboration with the Public Prosecution Service and the municipality of Hilversum conducted a trial with a similar camera at two level crossings. After a considerable amount of fines in the initial phase road users increasingly adhered to the traffic rules. As a result in 2020 there were as many as 50 percent fewer violations and safety on these two level crossings was significantly improved. After this trial the tendering process started.Privacy environment guaranteedThe camera only looks at the level crossing and cannot move or look into houses and gardens. Other vehicles pedestrians and cyclists unrelated to an offense are automatically blurred by the camera. This guarantees the privacy of local residents and road users.Continue to monitor ProRail BOAsPedestrians and cyclists who commit a violation are of course more difficult to trace. That is why our BOAs continue to be recognizable and unrecognizable on location on a regular basis.Level crossing improvement programThe use of speed cameras is part of the National Levels Improvement Program LVO. This program was started in 2014 by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management IenW and ProRail is carrying it out on behalf of the Ministry. The aim of the LVO is to improve the flow and safety on and around level crossings. If the trial in Bunnik is successfully completed ProRail wants to start installing cameras in 22 municipalities. This happens at railway crossings where traffic rules are violated relatively often and the risk of collisions and near misses is greater. IenW has made a budget available for this. The cameras will be installed in close collaboration with the municipalities.
