π Tender Overview
An American delegation of three members of Congress and flood specialists from the American Flood Coalition were updated on water safety in Limburg this week. The Flood Coalition is an organization that works with 370 U.S. cities, governments, the military and the business community to explore ways to improve water safety.
The purpose of the visit, which was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was to show how the region deals with flood risks, what lessons have been learned and what solutions are being worked on.
During an informal meeting last Monday, the Members of Congress were welcomed in Heerlen by a delegation from Limburg. This included deputy Stephan Satijn, Roel Wever (mayor of Heerlen), Antoine Scholten (mayor of Venlo) and Wim Fabries (Rijkswaterstaat).
On Tuesday, the delegation in Valkenburg was updated on the approach to water safety in Limburg. The topic of discussion was, among other things, the Water Safety and Space Limburg (WRL) programme. From this programme, the government, the Province of Limburg, the Limburg Water Board and the Limburg municipalities are working together to not only better protect Limburg against high water, but also to prepare it better. The delegation then visited the Grensmaas project: the largest river project in progress in the Netherlands. There they were informed about the river security in South Limburg.
