Let's get started! On March 12, ProRail selected contractor Van Hattum en Blankevoort to build an underpass at Schiedam Centrum station. The underpass is part of a route that allows cyclists and pedestrians to safely cross the train and metro tracks. The underpass is scheduled for completion at the end of 2028.
Direct and safe route
The new underpass connects Schiedam Oost with the future residential area Schieveste. It also plays a key role in the area development SchieDistrict, where a total of 3,000 new homes are being built. With the underpass, we are building a safe, direct route for cyclists and pedestrians. ProRail has selected contractor Van Hattum en Blankevoort to realize the underpass.
Good party

Ready by the end of 2028
Construction of the Boerhaavelaan underpass in Schiedam is expected to start in mid-2026. The work will last until the end of 2027. The municipality of Schiedam will then take care of the finishing. Slow traffic will be able to use this new route from the end of 2028.
Antoinette Laan, alderman for Housing in the municipality of Schiedam: “On one side of the public transport hub, Schiedam will soon have sustainable, innovative business parks and a campus, where thousands of people are working on their future. And on the other side of the railway line, there are residential areas, such as Schieveste, Peperklip, Oost, Nieuw-Mathenesse and further on M4H. There will now be a safe and accessible route for residents, commuters, workers and visitors. The underpass breaks through the barrier effect of the road and the tracks and improves accessibility and safety. It also contributes to the desired changes in the station area.”
