Transportation: MTOP Authorities Visit SELF Workshops to Learn About Its Potential in the Railway System 11/13/2025 Share The Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Lucía Etcheverry, along with the National Director of Rail Transportation, Waverley Tejera, and authorities from the State Railways Administration (AFE) and the National Development Corporation (CND), visited the workshops of SELF (Railway Logistics Services), located in the historic Peñarol neighborhood. The main objective was to evaluate the company's operational capabilities and analyze its strategic potential within the national railway system. During the tour, the Director of Rail Transportation emphasized the goal of strengthening SELF's role as a "railway policy tool," capable of providing solutions to the country's logistics and transportation system. The official also emphasized that SELF's workshops "have nothing to envy in any railway workshop in the region," both for the quality of their facilities and their capacity to receive rolling stock, perform maintenance tasks, and provide comprehensive solutions to the railway system. For his part, SELF's manager, Alexis Gerschuni, explained that the workshop currently employs 10 people who handle various tasks: locomotive maintenance; general repairs and preparing equipment for its routes; cleaning, refueling; brake inspections; and "all safety-related matters" before each service. He also reported that the main active service is the transport of Portland cement from Minas to Manga, but they are seeking new clients and contracts with the goal of expanding services through the rehabilitation of new tracks. SELF is a state-owned company with technical and human capabilities that position it as a key player within the national railway system. "We are working diligently with the Ministry of Transportation, collaborating to ensure it can truly be a public policy tool that contributes to the country," Tejera affirmed.
