π Tender Overview
The Vienna public transport network will continue its comprehensive modernization measures in 2026: a total of 15 elevators and 13 escalators in the subway network will be renewed. Around 6.2 million euros will be invested in order to offer passengers even more comfort, safety and accessibility.
After more than 20 years of operation, 15 elevators are being brought up to date. The focus is particularly on the U6 line, but the other subway lines will also receive new systems. The Tscherttegasse station is getting an additional elevator to further improve accessibility. The new elevators meet the highest standards: acoustic announcements for people with visual impairments and displays for deaf people ensure inclusive use.
By the end of the year, new escalators will be installed in stations such as Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, Handelskai and Floridsdorf. They use less energy and are even safer thanks to better lighting.
The work takes an average of eight weeks per elevator. During the modernization, stations with side platforms will remain barrier-free accessible by changing at neighboring stations with central platforms.
Wiener Linien provides information about this in the stations, on the website and in the WienMobil app. There are temporary restrictions at the following stations:
U6 Tscherttegasse
The new additional elevator on the platform in the direction of Floridsdorf will be in operation from mid-February. Restrictions in the direction of Siebenhirten until summer 2026.

Since May, users have also been able to conveniently call all 291 elevators using their smartphone using the Liftboy app. In the future, the door closing time can also be extended using the app, a service that is particularly important for people with wheelchairs, walkers or strollers. Further information at: wienerlinien.at/liftboy
Passengers currently have access to 291 elevators in all 109 subway stations - they travel over 2,000 kilometers annually, which is equivalent to the straight line from Vienna to Cairo.
The Wiener Linien appeals to all passengers to leave the elevators to those who rely on them.
