The construction of the new underpass and the roofing of the platforms in Cologne is in full swing the construction work is three-quarters complete. Passengers at the busiest station in Central Bohemia will have fully barrier-free access to trains traffic safety will increase and the connection between the station and the city will be improved. The current value of the work being carried out is 1.075 billion crowns it will be completely finished at the end of next year.

View gallery (1) Kolin is among the ten most used railway stations on the network of the Railway Administration. The ongoing works aim to ensure comfortable and barrier-free movement of passengers throughout the station. This will enable a total of five elevators to reach the individual platforms. An important part of the project is the construction of a new 100-meter-long subway. It will lead under the entire track and connect the station with Starokolinska Street.
At the moment the re-laying of cables and the reconstruction of the fourth and fifth platforms have been completed. Currently workers are working on the third platform where they are building roofing lighting and paving.
The new underpass will be ready in the middle of next year. At the same time a simpler track numbering system will be used which will make it easier for passengers to find their way around especially during transfers. Next year work will move to the second and finally to the first platform.
The modernization of the station is coordinated with other investments of the city of Kolin especially with the reconstruction of Starokolinska Street and the construction of a parking garage. On the part of the Railway Administration in Starokolinska Street the railway crossing will be reconstructed and a new pedestrian crossing will be built. These modifications will enable a safe connection between the station and the parking garage.
A big challenge for the construction was the flood in 2024. The already excavated cable pit was flooded with water and liquid sands appeared on the site. The original project did not take them into account and compared to it the site also had different geological conditions. The pit had to be secured and rebuilt. It delayed the entire construction by several months and made it more expensive.
In the future access to the station from the other bank of the Elbe is also expected to be improved through a new pedestrian and bicycle connection.
The provision of barrier-free access to the platform in Cologne is partly financed by a loan from the European Investment Bank within the Czech Railway Infrastructure Rehabilitation project.
