πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

* Figure of 10.1% in 2024 is the result of joint work between the State and mining companies to close gender gaps in the sectorThe participation of women in Peruvian mining reached a historic figure of 10.1% in 2024, compared to the 6.2% observed in 2015, exceeding double digits for the first time, highlighted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), whose significant progress is attributed to the result of the joint work between the State and mining companies to close gender gaps in the sector.

This increase shows a gradual but continuous process of incorporating women into the subsector, with a more marked acceleration starting in 2020, said Mayra Figueroa, director of the Directorate of Sustainability and Mining Articulation (DSAM).

He noted that, from a territorial perspective, female mining employment is highly concentrated in the countrys main mining operations. In 2024, Arequipa led the national ranking with 7,255 women, followed by Moquegua 2,461, Cusco 1,403 and Lima 1,252.

These regions show relatively more favorable conditions for the incorporation of women into formal employment, linked to a greater presence of large mining companies, formal hiring schemes and corporate diversity and inclusion policies, he stressed.

Regarding female mining employment according to job function, he said that it is mainly concentrated in administrative functions, which in 2024 represented 24.2% of the total number of workers in said category.

In management positions, womens labor participation reached 14.6%, which reflects gradual advances in womens access to management and decision-making positions within the mining subsector.

Regarding the Small Mining Producer stratum, the participation of women presented a moderate evolution, standing at 8.9% in 2024, with slight fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. For its part, in the Artisanal Mining Producer stratum, female participation remained the highest among the three strata, reaching 13.3% in 2024.

In this framework, the MINEM has been promoting initiatives aimed at strengthening the role of women in mining activity, highlighting the Magical Women program, emphasizes Figueroa, based on the institutional participation of the ministry, the First Program for Emerging Women Leaders in the Extractive Sector in Peru, in 2018.

Since its creation in 2019 and until 2025, the program has developed 29 editions, allowing 1,293 female leaders to be trained at the national level, contributing to the strengthening of capacities, leadership and territorial coordination in areas of mining influence, concluded the director of the DSAM.
