📋 Tender Overview
The country has 100 million metric tons of copper reserves, representing 10.2 % of the global total. The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) stressed that Peru seeks to convert its copper reserves into the engine of sustainable industrial development, generating greater income and consolidating its position in global markets of high value products.
The General Directorate of Mining Promotion and Sustainability (DGPSM) said that the axes of this strategy are:
* Promotion of plants to transform copper into cathodes and wire, key supplies for global industries.
* Development of industrial poles in mining departments such as Arequipa, Moquegua and Apurimac.
* Implementation of environmental standards and traceability to ensure responsible copper.
* Local labor training for specialized jobs in processing and innovation.
* Increase processing capacity through the construction and modernization of foundations and refineries.
The Minem stressed that mining operations in the country are already incorporating advanced technologies to guarantee sustainability and efficiency. An example is the Quellaveco project (Anglo American), which has implemented remote automation and control systems to optimize processes and reduce the environmental footprint. Similarly, Peru accelerates its energy transition with the amendment of Law No. 28832, in line with the global demand for critical minerals.
According to Mining Yearbook 2024, Peru was as a second country with greater copper reserves in the world (100 million fine metric tons), equivalent to 10.2 % of the global total, only behind Chile (19.4 %).
Copper is a crucial metal for economic growth and sustainable development of Peru, as well as a key mineral in the global energy transition, thanks to its role in electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructures and electricity transmission, said Walter Sanchez, general director of Mining Promotion and Sustainability of Minem
