πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

With the participation of indigenous peoples and State entities, actions were coordinated to strengthen the sustainable management of one of the most biodiverse territories in the Peruvian Amazon. The Ministry of the Environment (Minam) reactivated the Peruvian National Committee of the GEF Project Integrated Management of the Putumayo-Ica River Basin, strengthening the coordination between public entities, indigenous organizations and strategic partners to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in one of the most important basins in the Amazon.

During the session, held on July 6 at the Minam headquarters, actions were coordinated to consolidate the technical and institutional support that will allow the implementation of interventions aimed at the conservation of freshwater ecosystems, the sustainable use of natural resources and the improvement of the quality of life of local populations.

The general director of Biological Diversity of Minam, Mirbel Epique, highlighted that the reactivation of this committee will strengthen coordination between the institutions involved and ensure articulated participation of the State in the implementation of the actions planned for the basin.

In turn, the director of the GEF Putumayo-Ica Project, Roberto Gomez, reported that 19 subprojects are currently being executed in the basin, of which six are developed in Peru. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening food security, promoting sustainable production systems, recovering ancestral knowledge, improving the management of hydrobiological resources and restoring ecosystems affected by mercury contamination.

Likewise, he highlighted Perus participation in three binational subprojects on environmental monitoring, conservation and fisheries management, to which four initiatives will be added directly led by indigenous peoples of the country.

During the meeting, the importance of strengthening the support of public institutions to ensure the sustainability of interventions and advance strategic instruments such as the Knowledge Management Strategy, the Basin Action Plan, the Early Warning System for mercury and fisheries management plans, aimed at strengthening environmental governance and decision-making in the territory, was also addressed.

The Putumayo-Ica basin has a high ecological value as it houses more than 25 types of ecosystems and an important cultural diversity represented by indigenous peoples. In this context, the GEF Putumayo-Ica Project constitutes a key platform to strengthen the integrated management of natural resources through joint work between the State, indigenous organizations and international cooperation.
