π Tender Overview
Railway underpass Peter-Tunner-Gasse in Graz will be made fit for the new south route by mid-2026
Important milestone: All three new structures were completed according to plan
(Graz, August 19, 2025) The aging railway bridge over Peter-Tunner-Gasse in the north of Graz is currently being rebuilt and thus made fit for the future. In order to maintain railway operation, the new building is done in several phases. A total of three bridge structures for two track axes each had to be removed and rebuilt in a row. The third and last structure was completed last week. This reaches one of the most important milestones and rail traffic is possible again without restrictions.
No breather
Nevertheless, there is still a lot to do with the project: according to the structures, it is first to use the supply and disposal lines. During the past work, provisional lines had to be built for channel, water, gas and district heating. Now these are relocated regularly and at the same time space for new foundations and retaining walls for the new walking and bike path. In addition, preparatory work for plantings and green space design are already taking place. In the future, several dozen trees and shrubs provide more green, more shadows and more well -being.
Personal tunnel: Cyclists: Please descend inside
The new building makes a lock of the underpass for private transport and public transport still necessary until June 2026. Pedestrians: Inside, the construction site can pass as usual as usual by our own personnel. For cyclists: For the inside, however, it is said for the short piece: Please descend. Drivers: Inside, can be used individually and bypass the construction site. Ibererstrasse in the north and Eggenberger Strasse in the south are available as the next east-west connections. Bus line 62 is diverted via the station belt and Eggenberger Strasse.
The advantages at an overview
The new underpass takes place in cooperation with the city of Graz. In this way, not only is a future-proof railway bridge, but also an attractive west-east connection. The walking and cycling paths between Waagner-Biro-Strasse and the station belt are upgraded-on the south side with a sidewalk and a two-way bike path as well as on the north side with a widened sidewalk. The bike path is integrated into Frobelgasse. Pedestrians: In the future, the station belt can cross barrier -free at the road level. In addition, important supply lines such as electricity, telecommunications, water and channel are folded down or renewed.
