This first phase which was financed by the EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021 consisted of restoration cleaning demolition reconstruction and rehabilitation in the dilapidated parts at the back of the museum. As soon as the first phase is completed next year part of this site which benefited from this investment will be reopened to the public. In the second phase of the project a general modernization will be carried out and a masterplan is being drawn up for all the spaces of the museum. Internationally renowned museum designer Adrien Gardere was also recruited to help Heritage Malta in the second phase of the project. The Minister for National Heritage Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici claimed that This Government is committed to continue carrying out initiatives that protect the preservation restoration and rehabilitation of fortifications and historical places on regular basis. Now that the restoration work is underway in various areas of the museum building we are already looking to eventually implement the second phase of the project which also includes the restoration of spaces on the ground level where there are the ovens as well as the re-formation of the moat at the rear of the museum. The Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett said that this project is being done from funds that were given by the EEA and Norwegian funds with an investment of 1713200. This money was used not only to carry out the restoration work but also for the establishment of the Digitization Section within Heritage Malta and the purchase of modern equipment that allowed the digitization of the maritime heritage. In fact in the last two years thousands of artifacts from the collection of the Maritime Museum have already been digitized. A Collection Management System CMS was also set up where the cataloging of these collections is done through specialized software.
