The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas Puchades, met today with directors of the Spanish Group of Insurance Entities of Combined Agricultural Insurance (Agroseguro) to take stock of the damage caused by climatic adversities such as floods, hailstorms or drought and by fires throughout this year.
The minister has highlighted the importance of agricultural insurance in risk management, as a key tool to help farmers and ranchers in the face of losses caused by increasingly frequent adverse weather phenomena due to climate change.
He recalled that the Government allocated 315 million euros to the 2026 Insurance Plan to subsidize the taking out of policies, a figure that rose to 344 million euros to respond to the losses in the agricultural sector due to the storms in January and February.
In the meeting with the president and general director of Agroseguro, Ignacio Machetti Bermejo and Sergio de AndrΓ©s Osorio, respectively, and with the deputy director of the State Agrarian Insurance Entity (Enesa), Carmen SΓ‘nchez Morillo-Velarde, the latest accident report of the entity was analyzed. With provisional data for the period between January 1 and August 26, the affected insured area was 1.28 million hectares, with a compensation forecast of 441 million euros.
The storms at the beginning of the year, the episodes of hail and wind, the spring frosts, the intense heat of the summer months, the hail and the intense storms of recent weeks have caused significant damage, especially to agricultural crops, with almost 326 million euros, mainly in herbaceous crops, fruit trees, vineyards, vegetables, citrus fruits, strawberries and red fruits, and nuts.
Fire incidents on insured farms have affected 16,377 hectares, with expected compensation of around 2.7 million euros.
According to the aforementioned report, the fires have caused damage, above all, in mountains and lands without forest use. The losses caused by fire in the agricultural sector, although they have increased in the last two years, are lower compared to those caused by other risks such as drought, frost or hail.
The storms that occurred in August have caused losses worth close to 50 million euros in insured farms.
