The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, met today with the fishing and aquaculture sector to address the main challenges of the coming months: the European Union's fisheries negotiations on total allowable catches (TAC) and quotas for 2027 and the future Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 and the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
Representatives of the Spanish Fishing Confederation (Cepesca), the National Federation of Fishermen's Guilds (FNCP) and the Spanish Aquaculture Business Association (Apromar) participated in the meeting.
Looking at the outlook for this quarter, Planas has reported that stability is expected for the main Atlantic fisheries, given the good global situation of the main species.
βWe will follow the negotiations on mackerel very closely,β due to the lack of consensus among all the countries participating in this fishery. Furthermore, for the agreement with the United Kingdom, an attempt will be made to obtain the best possible quota of northern hake.
In the Mediterranean, he stressed that the selectivity and sustainability measures defended by Spain have been adopted with great effort by the Spanish fleet, to which Planas thanked for their commitment, "because they are working." He stressed that "we hope that scientific reports confirm the recovery of resources" and, in that context, "we will not accept new reductions in fishing days that could put the profitability of the sector at risk."
The minister has also reported on the negotiations of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 and the future Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), in which Spain demands sufficient financing for the sector and a greater balance between environmental sustainability and the economic and social profitability of fishing activity.
Regarding the economic consequences of the war in the Middle East and its impact on the main productive sectors, the minister recalled the Government's support for fishing diesel.
The meeting also made it possible to address the upcoming review of the Western Mediterranean Plan, the modification of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and different national regulatory projects related to fisheries control, resource management and professional qualifications.
