The government approved a bill to amend the Identity Card and Passport Act which proposes to improve the process of issuing personal documents and making the service of issuing personal documents more convenient for citizens.One of the main proposals is to simplify the procedure for taking identity documents so that a new identity card or new passport can be safely delivered to the place indicated by the citizen at his or her request. Currently this service is available only to citizens living abroad.In order to facilitate the submission of documents when applying for the issue of an identity card or passport to a child it is proposed to provide that a child does not have to be present when applying for an identity card or passport for a child under two years of age. At the moment one-year-olds have to be brought to the migration department by their parents.We want to make it easier and more convenient for citizens to receive their personal documents. For this reason it is important to speed up certain steps and thus reduce queues in the Migration Department said Minister of the Interior Rita Tamaunien.It is also proposed that a citizen from the age of 70 onwards should be issued with a valid identity card for a longer period - 20 years. Currently a 20-year-old identity card is issued only to citizens over the age of 75. Such an arrangement will allow fewer citizens of honorable age to exchange their identity documents less frequently. The bill also contains other proposals that would simplify and expedite the procedures for issuing personal documents. The amendments have yet to be approved by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.
