π Tender Overview
We have had an explosive year 2025, filmmakers are on the right track, films that are invested with care, attention to detail, and have clearer orientations will win and succeed; Its time for us to look abroad, towards broader markets in both market films and art films. Download Film critic Hoang Anh TuanGovernment Electronic Newspaper had a conversation at the beginning of the new year with film critic Hoang Anh Tuan (Hoang Tuan), currently Editor-in-Chief of Cinema World Magazine, about Vietnamese cinema in 2025 and entering 2026 to continue the explosive successes of Vietnamese films. Film critic Hoang Anh Tuan used to be a lecturer at the Postgraduate Department of Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema, as well as a member of the Organizing Committee and Jury of many prestigious film activities such as: Da Nang Asian Film Festival; Hanoi International Film Festival, Vietnam Film Festival; Kite, Green Star, Media 24h awards... A booming year for Vietnamese cinema. Is 2025 a big win year for Vietnamese cinema? Critic Hoang Anh Tuan: 2025 is a truly booming year for Vietnamese cinema. That success comes from many aspects. First of all, in terms of revenue, for the first time after a long period of being affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, Vietnamese cinema achieved record revenue. If in 2024, the revenue of Vietnamese films reached more than 1,900 billion VND, this year it has more than doubled, reaching more than 3,650 billion VND, accounting for 62% of total box office revenue (in 2024, it accounted for 42%). These telling numbers bring a positive signal that we have captured the market share of Hollywood movies, blockbuster movies, and movies of major cinemas right at home. Download The movie Red Rain sets a record for Vietnamese film revenue at the box office. Whats more special about 2025 is the return of films invested and produced by the State. This comeback has a fresher, stronger look and is well received by the audience not only with revenue but also with art. One thing is for sure, looking back at Vietnamese cinema in the past year, we cannot help but mention the movie Red Rain, the most popular movie ever, reaching a revenue of more than 700 billion VND, surpassing Tran Thanhs movie Mai and setting a record for Vietnamese film revenue. In addition, films such as Death in the Air, Tunnels - Sun in the Dark were also very successful, warmly received by the audience and achieved high revenue. From these films, there is great hope for state-invested and produced films to return with a completely new look with young filmmakers and a very young, modern cinematic language, closer to the audience. Another very notable point of 2025 is the presence of three Vietnamese animated films. For the first time, we have animated films for commercial cinema and are approaching international techniques, techniques, and technology. It is also a very positive sign when animated films are well received by the audience, something that has never happened before. From there, we pave the way towards building the film industry in particular, contributing to the development of the countrys cultural industry in general. Reviewing the above successes shows that 2025 is truly a booming year for Vietnamese cinema. However, in 2025 there will still be films with revenue under 1 billion, or even lower. What do you think is the cause of this failure? Critic Hoang Anh Tuan: When the cinema industry explodes in terms of revenue and quantity, it will create a clear divide. It can be seen that 2025 is an extremely special year when movies are invested more carefully, more seriously and more professionally. Those films have a very good investment in scripting and good screenwriters are involved right up to the post-production stage. According to market statistics from manufacturers, costs for pre-production and post-production have increased by about 20%-30%. That means filmmakers are very meticulous and serious and invest more in their films. From there, it will create a clear differentiation. As professional filmmakers, they focus on producing better films, and their films will have higher revenues. On the contrary, filmmakers who have a half-hearted mindset in making films, dont invest well, and have a trend-following mindset will find it very difficult to succeed. Thus, in 2025 we see a very clear differentiation and that will continue in 2026. With about 70 movies expected to be shown this year, that differentiation becomes more and more obvious. Professional filmmakers who invest carefully and conscientiously will survive and filmmakers who invest superficially will be eliminated in the market. That is a natural elimination in a period called the current hinge. Download The movie Tunnels - Sun in the Dark was also very successful, warmly received by the audience and achieved high revenue. Movie quality determines revenue. Thus, now we will compete with works, not with qualifications.names of the box office? Critic Hoang Anh Tuan: Actually, there are many factors in competition. Competing by name is also a factor. So I think there are two phases in the box office strategy. First are the names of actors and directors, that is, brands or trendsetters, all of which will open the doors of theaters for the film to hit theaters. Whether or not that movie can exist in the hearts of fans and at the box office depends on the second issue, which is the investment in quality. I think any movie must have those two elements and cannot be separated because that is the law of the market. A movie of course must have good quality to exist. We can unlock theaters by name, by tricks. But achieving high revenue is determined by the quality of the film. Revenue comes from theater box office revenue, from being able to continue showing overseas, selling to television channels, attending film festivals or promoting the brand. That is, those films also play a role in affirming the brand of the director and the entire production crew
