π Tender Overview
With funding from the German-Israeli Foundation GIF and the German U15 association the Hebrew University of Jerusalem HUJI and the Freie Universitt Berlin FUB hosted a joint Digital Humanities Winter School in Jerusalem from February 27 to March 1 and consolidate their strategic partnership. 40 young scientists doctoral students and masters students from universities in Germany and Israel came together on the Mount Scopus campus of HUJI to learn and try out digital methods and tools. The interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities DH deals with the use of computing tools - from established research software to specially tailored algorithms and artificial intelligence - to expand traditional research and to develop new and innovative methods in the humanities. In recent years DH have developed from a technical and methodological supplement to existing humanities research across the board into an independent interdisciplinary discipline that uses knowledge and methods from computer science mathematics data science and other sciences to tackle traditional humanities questions in a new way.In the bilateral winter school participants from a wide variety of disciplines from archeology and religious studies to literary studies and psychology were familiarized with various aspects of DH. They could acquire basic knowledge about available DH-related software get to know innovative projects of the last years and get a deeper understanding of how these projects are organized. The individual workshops conducted by relevant experts from Germany and Israel were rounded off by a series of productive interdisciplinary discussions between PhD students interested in DH and postdocs from various universities in Israel and Germany. As part of his inaugural visit to HUJI the German Ambassador to Israel Steffen Seibert also paid a visit to the Winter School and emphasized the role of science in the strong ties between Germany and Israel. Scientific connections according to Seibert established real contacts between people long before diplomatic relations. There are currently more than 5000 joint scientific projects with German and Israeli participation which show that science has always been and will remain an important cornerstone of diplomatic exchange. The joint DH Winter School was organized by the respective competence centers for digital humanities the Ada Lovelace Center for Digital Humanities at Freie Universitt and the Center for Digital Humanities at the Hebrew University . A continuation of the school next year at the Free University of Berlin is being planned.
