The percentage of people who used mobile internet for digital banking operations increased from 13.8% in 2022 to 43.6% in 2024, which means that it tripled in two years.
The use of the Internet for digital banking is growing and applications and electronic wallets are included here, said the director of Regulatory Policies and Competition at Osiptel, Lennin Quiso.
Likewise, Quiso added that this increase reflects greater citizen confidence in digital channels, as well as a growing adoption of mobile technology to facilitate financial procedures and improve accessibility to banking services.
But banking is not the only sector in which the internet is gaining ground. An uptick was also evident in the way of communicating. While in 2022, 50.9% of mobile users used applications such as WhatsApp, Zoom or Meet to make calls, in 2024 this figure reached 77.1%, an increase of 26.2 percentage points.
Digital entertainment also shows a transformation in consumer habits. In 2022, 30.2% accessed online audiovisual content (such as music and videos) without having to download it first. Two years later, this practice reached 45.1% of users.
