PT PLN (Persero) has implemented the use of electric vehicles (EV) for official vehicles and operational management vehicles from units to the center. This step was taken as an effort to reduce pollution and achieve net zero emissions by 2060.
The use of this electric vehicle is also a follow-up to the directives of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo through Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 7 of 2022 concerning the Use of Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicles as Operational Service Vehicles and/or Individual Vehicles for Service of Central Government Agencies and Regional Governments, as well as Letters Circular of the Minister of BUMN Number S- 565/MBU/09/2022 concerning Support for the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicle Program for Road Transportation.
In following up on the Government's direction, PLN issued various internal policies to encourage the use of electric vehicles. As of July 2023, it is recorded that PLN has used more than 325 electric cars and more than 1,500 electric motorbikes as company operational vehicles throughout Indonesia.
Executive Vice President for Corporate Communications and TJSL PLN, Gregorius Adi Trianto, said that PLN continues to support the Government's program to realize clean energy. One of them is through the use of EV in company operations.
"This is proof of our commitment to supporting the energy transition from fuel-based vehicles to electricity. It has started with all PLN units using EVs as operational vehicles and official vehicles. Even all PLN directors have also used electric cars as official vehicles. This is in line with the initiative by the Government to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution through the use of EVs," said Gregorius.
Support for accelerating the electric vehicle ecosystem within the company is also proven by PLN by creating an electric motor conversion program for Central PLN employees. As many as 50 oil-fueled motorbikes belonging to employees who register first will be converted into electric motorbikes for free.
"To support the use of EV acceleration, PLN makes it easy for employees who want to convert fuel motorbikes into electric motorbikes, specifically for the first 50 employees it is carried out free of charge, so everything is free," said Gregory.
However, said Gregorius, there are several provisions for employees who can get free vehicle conversion services.
"Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 110 to 160 cc, with a valid Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK), and the location of the motorbike must be in Greater Jakarta," he concluded.
Gregorius added that PLN has also continued to support the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem by encouraging the growth of adequate infrastructure in the country. Because the implementation of electric vehicles is a strategic step for the company to encourage national energy transformation.
Currently there are more than 600 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU), more than 1,400 Public Electric Vehicle Battery Exchange Stations (SPBKLU), and more than 9,000 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPLU) spread across Indonesia.
"PLN has provided adequate infrastructure, we as movers must also provide concrete examples, one of which is using an EV. So people don't hesitate to switch to using EVs," said Gregory.
