📋 Tender Overview
Lake Tisza is one of the most popular cycling destinations in Hungary, attracting cycling enthusiasts with its unparalleled natural beauty and excellent infrastructure. This year, the Lake Tisza express train provides an ideal opportunity for those departing from the capital from spring to autumn to comfortably reach the shores of the lake and take an unforgettable tour in the wonderful environment.
The Lake Tisza express train runs between Keleti Railway Station and Tiszafüred from March 15 to November 2 this year. It runs on weekends and holidays between March 15 and May 25, daily between May 26 and August 31, and again on weekends and holidays between September 6 and November 2. The train departs from Budapest at 8:10 AM and arrives in Tiszafüred at 10:39 AM. It stops in Hatvan, Füzesabony and Poroszló on the way. On the way back, it departs from Tiszafüred at 5:46 PM and arrives in Budapest at 8:15 PM, so there is enough time for a pleasant bike ride around the lake.
The train is specifically designed for cyclists. Between March 15 and mid-May and September 6 and November 2, there are nearly 20 bicycle spaces available, while between mid-May and August 31, this number increases to 50. Specially designed bicycles, such as tandems or bicycles with trailers, can also be transported by purchasing two bicycle tickets. However, you do not need to buy a bicycle space ticket, a bicycle ticket or a national bicycle pass is sufficient.
The lake is not only accessible by direct express train, but it can also be accessed from the south from Kisköre and Abádszalók, with passenger trains between Kisújszállás and Kál-Kápolna. In Kisújszállás, we provide a transfer option to the Cívis InterRégiók in the direction of Debrecen and Szolnok.
There are places where we even transport bicycles by bus
This year, similarly to last year, the MÁV Group plans to provide bicycle transport services on VOLÁN routes during the summer time. Accordingly, from March 30 to October 25, as last year, in addition to buses operating between Budapest and the Mátra and Lake Tisza regions, bicycles will be transported between the specified stops on certain routes operating between Budapest and Salgótarján, Eger, Kazincbarcika and Miskolc.
It's better to rent a bike
Passengers have already purchased 46 percent of bicycle fare products on the MÁV app, where tickets can be purchased 5% cheaper. Following the introduction of the tariff reform last March, bicycle tickets cost a uniform 500 forints regardless of distance, but we recommend the Bicycle Country Pass to our passengers who regularly transport bicycles, which is worth purchasing after 10 trips (5 round trips). The pass allows you to travel freely throughout the country, as it is valid on the entire HÉV network in addition to MÁV (including the Szeged-Hódmez?vásárhely TramTrain) and GYSEV services. It costs 4,950 HUF and is valid for 30 days. The success of the Bicycle Country Pass is demonstrated by the fact that more than 20,000 of them were sold in 2024, of which 39% were purchased online by cyclists. For trains requiring a bicycle space ticket, a bicycle space ticket must be purchased in addition to the bicycle national pass. The MÁV Group also encourages the combination of sustainable modes of transport with other tariff discounts, for example, it is possible to purchase a bicycle ticket at a discount with a Hungarian Bicycle Club membership or a START Club card, with which the ticket costs 375 forints.
