📋 Tender Overview
New standard will allow managing high tourist demand and improving the visitor experience.Within the framework of the high tourist demand for Easter, the National Quality Institute (Inacal) approved the Peruvian Technical Standard NTP 799.022:2026, which establishes a management system for Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI), aimed at strengthening the safety, sustainability and quality of the visitor experience in Peru.
The new technical standard will allow regional authorities and actors in the tourism sector to more efficiently manage the high demand of travelers in key seasons, optimizing resources and strengthening the quality of services by incorporating innovation, technology and quality standards, in a context where tourists prioritize safe, sustainable and personalized experiences.
This standard represents a turning point in the countrys tourism management, since it allows destinations to plan, measure and improve their performance with criteria of sustainability, innovation and quality. It is not only about attracting more tourists, but about better managing destinations for the benefit of citizens and the sector, said the executive president of Inacal, Cesar Jose Bernabe Perez.
Tourism represents more than 3% of the national GDP and generates around 1.3 million direct and indirect jobs. In addition, domestic tourism concentrates close to 70% of the total movement, with dates such as Holy Week being key to boosting local economies in regions such as Ayacucho, Cusco, Arequipa and Cajamarca.
A new standard to transform tourist destinations
NTP 799.022:2026 establishes the requirements to design, implement and improve management systems for Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI), based on five key pillars: governance, sustainability, innovation, technology and accessibility. This approach allows tourist destinations to:
Optimize the management of the flow of visitors in high seasons such as Easter
Incorporate digital tools to improve the tourist experience
Promote sustainable practices that reduce environmental impact
Guarantee accessibility for all travelers
Strengthen public-private coordination
In addition, it will allow tourist destinations to evolve towards more modern and competitive models, capable of anticipating tourist demand through data analysis; manage key services such as transportation, security and accommodation; promote tourism products with cultural value, improve connectivity and communication with visitors.
A Smart Tourist Destination (ITD) is one that integrates technology, innovation and sustainability to improve the visitor experience and the citizens quality of life, ensuring balanced development in the economic, social and environmental spheres.
The adoption of this standard positions Peru on the path towards more competitive, inclusive tourism aligned with international standards.
