It was in the meeting held this Tuesday, December 9, by the Prime Minister of the Government, in charge of Administrative Coordination, Manuel Osa Nsue, with those responsible for the Ministry of Transport, Telecommunications and Artificial Intelligence Systems, as well as the directors of the telephone operators that operate in the country; to, among other issues, seek effective solutions that counteract the scams that occur on social networks and the instability of coverage.
The growth of digital scams and the persistent instability in mobile telephone services have been the subject of analysis in the key meeting chaired this Tuesday by the Prime Minister with those responsible for Transport, led by his minister, Honorato Evita Oma, as well as the directors of the main telephone operators operating in the country. A meeting that has taken place in a climate of deep analysis and a call for responsibility, in response to growing citizen concern about the increase in digital scams and continuous interruptions in telephone coverage.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister firmly expressed the Governments position regarding the rise of cybercrime, pointing out that the protection of citizens against the insecurity of digital platforms is today a national priority. In this sense, it has urged the operators and the guardian ministry to coordinate more effective strategies for the detection, prevention and punishment of fraudulent practices that violate the security of users. There must be a forceful institutional response to these events, he pointed out.
Likewise, the Prime Minister has highlighted the urgent need to improve the quality of mobile telephone services throughout the national territory. Remembering that access to stable and secure communications must be a priority and an essential requirement for the economic and social development of the country.
At this point, it has required them to implement technical and operational measures that guarantee continuous and reliable coverage, especially in areas with greatest deficiencies.
During the meeting, those responsible for the telephone operators presented the technical challenges they face, as well as the plans they already have in place to modernize network infrastructure and expand service capacity as well as improve coverage.
Regarding digital scams, operators have pointed out the causes that allow these scams, such as the lack of knowledge that users have about the safe use of tools such as WhatsApp. Noting that many users do not close the sessions when deleting the phone number with which they registered on said platform, this allows their accounts to remain active on this platform and be used by third parties for fraudulent purposes.
To this end, they have warned about the risks of sharing personal data on digital platforms without due caution, a problem that not only affects Equatorial Guinea but represents a global challenge. However, in response to the Governments concern, the operators have committed to implementing stricter controls on user registration, developing awareness campaigns on the correct use of social networks, and working in coordination with the Government to improve digital security. Regarding the instability of coverage, the operators have proposed executing a technical project that reduces coverage failures throughout the country.
For its part, the guardian ministry has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the regulatory framework and supervision mechanisms to ensure compliance with the required quality standards. To this end, the services of the company CIBERTEC have been hired to carry out a diagnosis of the coverage situation throughout the country, whose report is in the process of being prepared to send it to the different operators.
At the close of this meeting, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the Governments willingness to continue accompanying and closely supervising the process of improving digital and mobile telephone services.
Insisting that digital security and the guarantee of reliable coverage constitute essential objectives within the range of activities to be carried out to improve the telecommunications sector in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.
