The Government of Cape Verde and the Government of the Peoples Republic of China signed, this Tuesday, August 18, a cooperation protocol for the execution of the Three Schools Rehabilitation Project in Cape Verde, with technical and financial assistance from China. The project covers the Salineiro Secondary School, in Ribeira Grande de Santiago, the Olegario Tavares Secondary School, in Sao Miguel, and the Eduardo Gomes Miranda Educational Complex, in Santa Catarina do Fogo. The three infrastructures were originally built as part of Chinese cooperation. For the Minister of Education, Professional Training, Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Arnaldo Brito, the signing of the protocol is part of the Governments effort to improve the conditions of schools and modernize the educational system. We are here in this act of great value for us, as the new Government has assumed education as an absolute priority, stated the minister, highlighting that, despite the sectors high costs, the Government considers education an essential investment for the countrys development. It is an investment for the country. This new Government has made the decision to assume this cost, he stated, highlighting the importance of support from international partners, particularly China. In addition to the restoration of existing buildings, the project envisages the construction of new offices, laboratories and dining areas, as well as the supply of teaching equipment and office furniture. Arnaldo Brito also defended the need to invest in the training and qualification of teachers, considering them fundamental for improving the educational system. We want to transform the entire educational system, modernize the school system for children, invest heavily in teacher training, he stated. Another of the priorities highlighted by the governor is to strengthen the connection between school and the world of work, allowing students to gradually have contact with the professional market. The school must be linked to the world of work, he stated, noting that this principle is provided for in the Constitution of the Republic and in the Basic Law of the Educational System. Minister Arnaldo Brito also expressed his expectation of continued support from China in the education sector, highlighting the already existing cooperation, namely in the construction of the University of Cape Verde campus. The Chinese Ambassador to Cape Verde, Zhang Yang, considered the signing of the protocol another result of bilateral cooperation in the education sector and highlighted the expected impact of the intervention in the three schools. According to the diplomat, the rehabilitation of infrastructures should provide teachers and students with a safer, more comfortable and modern learning and working environment, contributing to improving the quality of education in Cape Verde. Zhang Yang recalled other Chinese cooperation projects in the sector, namely the new campus of the University of Cape Verde, and stated that China is available to continue strengthening cooperation in education, including in the training of human resources and in welcoming Cape Verdean students into Chinese higher education. The signing of the protocol takes place in the year in which Cape Verde and China mark 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
