π Tender Overview
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has installed a new container crane at the DUSS terminal (Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-StraΓe) Mannheim-Handelshafen. The crane, which weighs around 380 tonnes and is 28 metres high, will be used by DB to load containers from road to rail and vice versa.
With a width of 43 metres, the new crane spans five transshipment tracks, two parking lanes and one lane. Thanks to the renewed crane technology, the Mannheim-Handelshafen transshipment terminal will be more efficient and operation will be significantly more environmentally friendly. With shorter throughput times, goods reach their destination faster. A new assistance system with a so-called soft landing ensures that the containers are placed more quietly on the trains and trucks.
Shifting transport to rail is an effective climate protection measure. Each of the almost 1,000 trains that depart from the Mannheim terminal each year already replaces several trucks, thus saving CO2.
As a hub for important freight traffic, the Mannheim terminal is an important part of the strong rail system in the south-west of Germany. Several daily connections, including to the German seaports and a number of international connections to European economic centres, are established in the Mannheim commercial port for the Rhine/Neckar metropolitan region.
DB is replacing both existing crane systems at the Mannheim-Handelshafen container terminal and, together with the federal government, is investing more than ten million euros in the project. The lifting assembly of the second crane system is scheduled for June.
