The state government is funding two projects to research alternative and supplementary methods to animal experiments. The avoidance of animal experiments is an important concern in terms of animal welfare. The state government is therefore specifically promoting research into suitable methods. It is our declared goal to further reduce the number and stress of laboratory animals in Baden-Wrttemberg. That is why we are again promoting suitable projects for the development of alternative and supplementary methods to animal experiments this year said Minister Peter Hauk MdL on xx. August in Stuttgart.Baden-Wrttemberg is an important location for biomedical research. This also means that animal experiments are carried out in many research institutions. Each application for a test is examined by the competent authorities and only approved if the strict legal requirements are met. However we also stand by our responsibility to develop alternatives. That is why we are specifically promoting the development and use of substitute and supplementary methods for animal experiments in science and teaching the minister continued. In some areas for example in applied medical research there are still no adequate alternatives. Certain tests for example to test the effectiveness and safety of drugs are required by law.Four funding applications were submitted for this years call for proposals. With the participation of an evaluation committee made up of representatives from animal welfare and science two projects were selected to receive fundingStem cell-based embryoid models for the study of gene regulation epigenetics and regenerationExtending the viability of cardiac cell and tissue models for basic and translational research to reduce and partially replace the use of animal modelsSee below for more information on the projects.Minister Hauk expressly thanks all scientists who have applied for their commitment. According to Hauk the evaluation committee that examined the applications also did an excellent job.
