πŸ“‹ Tender Overview

Passenger and baggage checks at Munich Airport are becoming even safer, faster and more convenient: the Free State of Bavaria put a total of five new computer tomographs (CT) into operation in Terminals 1 and 2 in good time before the start of the Whitsun holidays. These produce X-ray images in high-resolution and fully rotatable 3D views and will be used across the board at Bavarian commercial airports in the future. "We have tested the technology extensively and the result is clear: the passengers appreciate the systems because laptops and liquids no longer have to be unpacked and packed again, which makes the check much faster," explained Bavaria's Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter, who presented the devices at the airport today. "In addition, the CT scanners provide additional security, as they can detect explosives and other dangerous objects completely and automatically." The Free State of Bavaria is therefore investing more than 45 million euros to equip all checkpoints at Munich Airport with the modern technology .

Another advantage of the new checkpoints is that more passengers can place their luggage on the belt at the same time, which reduces waiting times. Up to 520 passengers per hour can be processed at a double lock – an increase of around 160 percent. Munich airport boss Jost Lammers : β€œThe new CT scanners are the 'next level' in terms of safety, high processing speed and convenience. An important building block that offers our guests a more pleasant travel experience.”

Passengers in Bavaria are the first in Germany who will be able to enjoy the full range of modern control technology: In addition to the two pilot systems in Terminal 2 that have been in use since 2019, three more control lanes will open in Terminal 1 and two in Terminal 1 at Munich Airport at the start of the Whitsun holidays Terminal 2 in operation. By the beginning of the summer holidays in 2026, all other checkpoints will be equipped in ten further construction phases, so that up to 48 lanes and 60 CT devices will be in use by the end. Nuremberg Airport is also to be completely converted during this period, and the first device has been in use since the end of February. Bavaria's third airport, Memmingen, will receive the technology during the next structural expansion.

Responsible for the security checks at the three Bavarian commercial airports are the air offices for southern and northern Bavaria, which are subordinate to the Bavarian Ministry of Transport. The southern Bavarian air authority at the government of Upper Bavaria has been successfully piloting the new technology since 2019 together with the security company SGM and the operator of Terminal 2. "The comprehensive equipment of the checkpoints with the modern CT devices is a milestone in security control technology," emphasized Upper Bavaria's district president Dr. Konrad Schober. "The innovative 3D technology not only makes the day-to-day work of the security staff easier, but also offers even more safety and comfort for the passengers - the best prerequisites for a relaxed start to the journey."
