Anyone who has developed a creative software idea and implemented it in a first prototype should quickly take care of the protection of the invention and patenting. A free two-week online course offered by the Hasso Plattner Institute HPI shows how necessary this is and how it works. It starts on March 6 under the title Patent Law How to Protect Your Innovation on the IT learning platform openHPI.The instructors Prof. Christian Czychowski and Dr. med. Jakob Valvoda are experienced lawyers and patent attorneys. We show attendees what IP rights there are and what benefits a patent offers says Valvoda. The openHPI online course promises to be particularly exciting in that the two course instructors answer the question of whether artificial intelligence and blockchains can also be patented. We will discuss who typically owns a software development and why it might be useful for a young company to apply for a patent adds the experienced patent attorney. The two instructors show you what to look for and what the usual procedure looks like. They also talk about open source software and discuss the parallels between licensing models for so-called free software and patents. The importance of patents has increased in recent years. They are not just something for big companies notes course leader Prof. Czychowski. Above all the value lies in the fact that patents are an essential asset especially for start-ups and young companies showing the companys innovation potential. It also prohibits competitors from producing offering and placing the subject of a patent for 20 years. As long as not only plagiarists could be repelled but also license income can be achieved.
