FMO, the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank, has announced a USD 100 million (INR-denominated) corporate debt facility for ReNew Solar Power Private Limited to support the expansion of ReNews renewable energy portfolio in India. The 10-year financing is intended to enable growth in solar and hybrid projects across the country.
The investment, announced on October 13, 2026, is described by FMO as its largest investment in Indias energy sector to date. FMO says it has classified 100% of the financing as Green, reflecting a climate mitigation contribution.

Renewable energy expansion supported through long-tenor financing
ReNew Solar Power Private Limited is the wholly owned subsidiary of ReNew Energy Global Plc, known as ReNew. FMO said the corporate debt facility will back the companys renewable energy expansion, including solar and hybrid projects across India.
FMOs announcement also places the transaction in the context of Indias energy transition and growing power demand. As FMO noted, ReNews existing solar and wind portfolio totals about 20 GW across 10 states and contributes approximately 1.9% of Indias power capacity.
Gender equality component tied to the 2X Challenge
Beyond renewable generation, FMO said the transaction reflects its commitment to reducing inequalities and qualifies under the 2X Challenge, a global initiative that supports gender equality and womens economic empowerment. FMO cited ReNews governance and accountability practices and an ambition to increase womens participation in its workforce to at least 30% by 2030, compared with an industry average of 11%.

FMO also said ReNew supports womens career advancement through mentoring and professional development programs. The bank highlighted this as part of the rationale for aligning the financing with gender and inclusion priorities.
Partnership between FMO and ReNew
In its statement, FMO said the long-tenor, INR-denominated structure is intended to support ReNews growth while adhering to global environmental, social and governance standards. ReNews finance leadership said the transaction is part of the companys broader capital-raising journey, providing long-tenor growth capital and diversifying funding sources.
The announcement positions the financing as commercially sound, long-duration support for renewable capacity development, with FMO describing the facility as spanning a decade.

Scale of ReNews portfolio and clean energy focus
ReNew is described as a decarbonization solutions company operating across Indias utility-scale renewable energy sector. In the announcement, ReNews clean energy portfolio is stated as 20.5 GW on a gross basis (including battery energy storage systems), as of August 18, 2026.
The company develops, builds, owns and operates utility-scale wind and solar energy projects and hydro projects, according to the information shared in the announcement. ReNew also listed manufacturing capacities for solar modules and solar cells, and said it is expanding solar cell manufacturing capacity by another 4 GW expected to be operational by December 2026.
Why This matters for the renewable energy transition
Long-term finance is often critical for renewable infrastructure projects because developers need predictable funding over construction and early operational phases. By backing expansion through a 10-year corporate debt facility, FMOs investment aims to support scaling of solar and hybrid energy capacity in India.

For civil society organizations and development practitioners, the inclusion of gender criteria alongside climate objectives signals how development finance can connect energy transitions with workforce and equality outcomes. It also reflects broader attention to localization and strengthening market conditions for private-sector-led renewable development--areas that frequently shape the design of energy and climate programs.

Why This Matters
FMOs USD 100 million long-tenor financing for ReNew highlights two current development finance priorities: scaling renewable energy and integrating inclusion objectives into mainstream energy investments. For NGOs, nonprofits and funders working on climate and economic development, the announcement offers a reference point for how gender-related commitments can be linked to corporate financing through established frameworks such as the 2X Challenge.
The structure also points to how development finance institutions may support private-sector infrastructure expansion in large markets like India, where project pipelines and grid demand are evolving quickly. Program designers may draw practical lessons on aligning climate mitigation criteria with workforce and accountability measures, and on monitoring ambitions such as womens participation targets alongside delivery of energy capacity.
