The number of unemployed job seekers increased by 10,400 from last year's August. A total of 64,700 new vacancies were reported. In all, the number of unfilled vacancies in August amounted to 114,400, which was 61,100 fewer than a year ago.
The total number of unemployed jobseekers was 249,500 at the end of August. This was 10,400 more than a year earlier and 29,200 fewer than in the previous month. These data derive from the Employment Bulletin of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
The number of unemployed jobseekers includes clients of Employment and Economic Development Offices and municipal experiments, as well as those fully laid off. Of unemployed jobseekers, 144,500 were customers of municipal experiments, which is 9,500 more than in August the year before.
At the end of August, the number of people laid off was 19,700 in the whole country, which was 4,900 more than a year earlier. The number of people fully laid off totalled 14,700, representing an increase of 5,100 from August the year before. The number of people fully laid off decreased by 3,700 from July.
The number of long-term unemployed was 90,800
The number of long-term unemployed — that is those who had been unemployed without interruption for at least a year — amounted to 90,800, down 1,500 on the previous year. The number of unemployed jobseekers over 50 years of age was 90,800, or 500 more than at the same time a year earlier.
Unemployed jobseekers under 25 years of age numbered 500,26, representing an increase of 100 from August last year. In all, 57.8 per cent of unemployed young people ended within three months of unemployment between January and August, which is 2.2 percentage points less than the year before.
Number of new vacancies decreased
The number of new vacancies reported during August totalled 64,700, or 30,700 fewer than in August the year before. In all, the number of unfilled vacancies in August amounted to 114,400, which was 61,100 fewer than a year ago.
At the end of August, the number of persons engaged in services included in the activation rate amounted to 108,000, up 2,100 on the previous year. These services include pay subsidies, labour market training, rehabilitative work activities and self-motivated studies.
Statistics Finland: Trend of unemployment rate 7.2 per cent
According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, the number of people in employment was 44,000 higher in August than one year earlier. The trend of the employment rate was 74.1%, which was 0.3 percentage points higher than in August the year before. According to the Survey, the unemployment total was 192,000, which is 5,000 more than a year ago. The trend of the unemployment rate was 7.2 per cent, or 0.2 percentage points higher than one year previously.
Key differences between the Employment Service Statistics and the Labour Force Survey
The data are based on the Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey. The source of the Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is the customer register of Employment and Economic Development Offices and municipal experiments, while Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey is a sample survey.
In the Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, unemployment is defined as a person not having an employment relationship or finding employment in entrepreneurial activities. In addition, in the Employment Service Statistics, persons fully laid off are included in the unemployed but not full-time students. The definition of unemployment in Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey is stricter: it requires unemployed persons to actively seek work during the 4 weeks preceding and readiness to accept work during the following 2 weeks. Internationally comparable, Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey produces official unemployment figures.
