📋 Tender Overview
Without Global Navigation Satellite System GNSS many jobs and societal functions would fall short. Digital services rely on time and location information provided by satellites to help banking and power grids work the rescue service finds the lost and the truck driver locates the stacks of wood. A new action plan for the development of satellite navigation in Finland has been published on 16 November 2021.The availability of time and location information required by digital applications is often taken for granted. With general technologicalization and digitalisation Finnish society has become dependent on the availability of reliable time and location information. For example information from GNSS systems is used in the production of transport services and in the operation of electricity and telecommunications networks. The aim of the operational program is to ensure the efficient use of GNSS systems in society and to support the operating conditions of the business community. The program identifies 19 concrete measures. They concern Finlands goals in international co-operation national readiness know-how and satellite navigation services. The operational program is a continuation of the program completed in 2017.Satellite navigation enables new types of products and applicationsThe operational program covers the years 2021-2025 when the performance of satellite navigation systems is expected to improve significantly. Between 2022 and 2024 the EUs Galileo system will be fully operational. Among other things the Galileo precision service which provides location data with an accuracy of about 20 centimeters opens up opportunities for new innovations in both the consumer market and for professional and public use. Early adoption of new features in product and application development can give players that take advantage of them a competitive advantage. In addition the public service based on the Galileo system is planned to be introduced in Finland in 2024. The PRS Public Regulated Service service is intended for public authorities and security-critical companies. The number of satellites has doubled in ten yearsOver the last ten years the development of satellite navigation systems has been rapid. Alongside the American GPS system the Russian GLONASS the Chinese BeiDou and the European Unions Galileo system have emerged. Indeed the total number of GNSS satellites has doubled in the last decade. The market for products and services based on satellite navigation systems continues to grow rapidly. The size of the market globally in 2019 was approximately EUR 150 billion of which the EU accounted for approximately EUR 38.4 billion. In 2019 more than six billion devices with a GNSS receiver were in use globally and annual sales of new devices were approximately 1.7 billion.
