The Secretary General of Fisheries, Isabel Artime, defends that environmental sustainability must advance hand in hand with the economic and social viability of the sector.
Spain has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable, competitive fishing and aquaculture with future prospects during the opening of the 37th period of sessions of the Fisheries Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which is being held in Rome until September 11.
The FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) is considered the main global intergovernmental forum for debate and cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture. In her speech at the opening session, the Secretary General of Fisheries, Isabel Artime, highlighted the strategic importance that these activities have for Spain, both for their economic dimension and for their social and cultural relevance, as well as their contribution to food security, employment and the cohesion of coastal communities.
Artime has pointed out that the progress made in resource protection must now be translated into stability, predictability and future opportunities for the sector. In this sense, he has defended that environmental sustainability must be accompanied by economic and social sustainability, so that companies can plan, invest and compete and new generations find opportunities to develop their professional future in fishing and aquaculture.
For this reason, he has vindicated the commitment that Spain maintains with the FAO and with international cooperation as an essential tool to face challenges that, due to their global dimension, require coordinated responses.
Among the examples of this collaboration, Artime has highlighted the Spanish support for the FAO Blue Ports initiative, in which the port of Vigo has participated since its inception, as well as the cooperation developed through the Training Ship and Intermares Fisheries Cooperation.
Likewise, the Secretary General wanted to especially recognize the role of people who work in the sector and, in particular, that of women fishermen and aquaculturists, coinciding with the celebration, in 2026, of the International Year of Women Farmers.
