📋 Tender Overview
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) -- The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has installed 1,297 free public Wi-Fi sites across the Ilocos Region, strengthening the governments push for nationwide digital inclusion and improved access to essential online services. The initiative supports the implementation of Republic Act No. 10929, which mandates free internet connectivity in public areas to ensure broader access to information, education, and government services. Under DICTs Free Public Internet Access Program, high-speed and secure Wi-Fi has been deployed in public offices, libraries, government hospitals, parks, public schools, state universities and colleges, and transport terminals. The expanded connectivity enables students to access digital learning materials, supports small businesses in adopting online platforms and cashless transactions, and enhances the delivery of e-government services. DICT Undersecretary for Special Concerns Christina Faye Condez-de Sagon said the regional rollout contributes to the countrys broader digital transformation agenda. We are all stakeholders in building a digitally connected Philippines. By expanding access, we empower communities, improve public services, and create more opportunities for Filipinos, she said. To address connectivity gaps in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, DICT Ilocos Regional Director Rachel Ann Grabador reported deploying 53 Provision of Mobile Solutions for Internet Liberty (PMSIL) devices. These portable units are designed for quick installation in remote and hard-to-reach communities, ensuring last-mile connectivity. Looking ahead, DICT plans to further expand coverage using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology to serve mountainous and island communities where traditional fiber infrastructure remains challenging. The move aims to sustain reliable internet access and bridge persistent digital divides. The Ilocos Regions connectivity expansion forms part of DICTs nationwide effort to build resilient digital infrastructure, promote inclusive economic growth, and enable greater participation in the digital economy.
