π Tender Overview
Measures were coordinated in a multi-sector meeting convened by the Provincial Municipality of Callao to immediately address the problem on Nestor Gambeta Avenue. With the aim of urgently addressing the impact on air quality in Callao, the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) participated in the multi-sector meeting convened by the Provincial Municipality of Callao on July 8, 2026. In said meeting, where the technical support and field actions deployed on Av. Nestor Gambeta (surroundings and perimeter channel of the new airport) were presented, representatives of the ministries of the Environment, Interior and Transport and Communications, as well as Produce, Sedapal, Lima Airport Partners (LAP) and the Regional Prefecture of Callao.
The Socio-Environmental Management Coordination (CGSA) of the OEFA reported that, after a first inspection carried out on June 19 in which stagnant water, sludge and unpleasant odors were found in a sector of Av. Nestor Gambetta, a follow-up was carried out on July 2. On this last visit it was verified that the area had been intervened with lime and earth, which significantly reduced the intensity of the odors.
For their part, specialists from the Directorate of Environmental Supervision in Productive Activities (DSAP) of the OEFA specified that the effluents present characteristics of domestic wastewater. Likewise, they preliminarily indicated that the odors do not correspond to industrial activities in the area; However, special supervisions have been scheduled for surrounding companies to technically evaluate the origin and rule out responsibilities.
Given the warning from the Chalaca commune and the prefecture about the residents intention to carry out protest measures, the institutions agreed to accelerate field investigations.
Along these lines, Sedapal will manage the use of a georadar to identify possible underground pipes or clandestine connections, which will help clarify the origin of the problem, while the Municipality of Callao will provide machinery and support personnel for the next joint technical interventions in the field.
With these actions, the OEFA reaffirms its commitment to continue with technical deployment and social support in the constitutional province to safeguard the health of citizens and guarantee the protection of the environmental environment.
