Strategic project would allow strengthening air connectivity, commerce and tourism in Moyobamba, Rioja and San MartinWith the aim of evaluating the viability and status of the Rioja Airport expansion project, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto Barrera, held a working meeting with the provincial mayor of Rioja, Jubinal Nicodemos Flores, in which the progress and challenges of this important initiative for the department of San Martin were analyzed.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that this air terminal represents a key infrastructure for the economic takeoff of the Alto Mayo area, which includes the provinces of Moyobamba and Rioja, by improving air connectivity, boosting trade and strengthening regional tourism.
Regarding the status of the project, it was reported that the Rioja Airport is included in the third investment package carried out by ProInversion. Currently, the Property Availability Directorate (DDP) of the MTC is developing the land release process, having identified 213 registered properties and 4 possessory properties, in parallel to the project formulation stage.
In this context, the head of the MTC pointed out that efforts are being made to ensure the necessary budget to complete the release of properties in charge of the sector, as well as evaluate connectivity with new airlines from the current airport, which has a landing strip suitable for aircraft with up to 70 passengers. Likewise, the possibility of implementing subsidized flights is being analyzed, in order to progressively strengthen the air terminal.
The Vice Minister of Transportation Juan Haro, the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC), the Directorate of Property Availability (DDP) and the Chief of Staff of the MTC also participated in the meeting.
