Henrys Law takes effect on November 1, 2026, strengthening carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements for all multi-unit residential buildings in Saskatchewan.
Announced earlier this year, Henrys Law expands existing CO requirements by mandating alarms in all residential suites, regardless of their proximity to fuel-burning appliances within a building.Β Saskatchewan implemented one of the nations strongest CO alarm requirements in 2022 and Henrys Law is the latest addition to keep residents safe.Β
Henrys Law is about preventing future tragedies and ensuring Saskatchewan residents have the protection they need from the dangers of carbon monoxide in their homes, Government Relations Minister Eric Schmalz said. With the implementation date just days away, residents, landlords and property owners must ensure their buildings meet the new standards before November 1. We are grateful to Henrys family for their courage and advocacy in support of these important changes.
The changes were introduced following the tragic death of 11-year-old Henry Losco, whose passing in December 2025, highlighted the need to strengthen protections for residents in all multi-unit residential buildings. Henrys parents, Marina Hills and Sergio Losco, have been outspoken in their call for stronger regulations and CO awareness.
Safety starts at home, Henry Loscos mother, Marina Hills said. You need to talk to your children about carbon monoxide so they know that it is impossible to detect without an alarm. You do not know its there until its too late.
CO cannot be detected by human senses. A properly installed and maintained CO alarm can provide critical time to respond to CO in your home, provide an important early warning of dangerous levels of CO and can help save lives.
The Saskatchewan accommodation industry fully supports the intent of Henrys Law and shares the provinces commitment to protecting guests and employees, Hospitality Saskatchewan President and CEO Jim Bence said. Guest safety is fundamental to our industrys core principles and we consider it to be our highest priority. We have taken every step to ensure our membership understands what Henrys Law means to them and how they can effectively comply with the new changes, ensuring that another tragedy like the one the Losco family has experienced never happens again.Β
