The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a significant investment in the modernization of Kazakhstans national grid. A loan of up to KZT 102 billion (EUR194 million equivalent) will be provided to Alatau Zharyk Company (AZhC), a regional electricity distributor serving approximately four million people in Almaty city and the surrounding region. This initiative is part of a broader government-led program aimed at upgrading the countrys energy infrastructure.
Background and Context
Kazakhstans energy grid, with over 24 GW of installed capacity, spans more than 470,000 sq. km, making it one of the worlds largest. Despite its size, the grid faces challenges such as outdated infrastructure and inefficiencies. The National Project for the Modernization of Energy and Utility Sectors (MEKS) aims to address these issues by ensuring reliable and high-quality services.
The Initiative
The EBRDs loan will enable AZhC, a subsidiary of Samruk Energy, to upgrade its electricity transmission and distribution systems. This includes the procurement of automated metering and telemechanic equipment and the enhancement of cybersecurity measures. The project also supports further digitalization through the installation of smart meters and the implementation of pilot smart grid technologies.
Expected Outcomes
The modernization is anticipated to yield annual electricity savings of approximately 22 GWh and cut CO2 emissions by around 12,000 tonnes per year. In addition to environmental benefits, the project aims to bolster the reliability of electricity supply, particularly benefiting the Almaty region and its ongoing smart city developments.
Broader Impact
This investment underscores the EBRDs commitment to sustainable development and infrastructure enhancement in Central Asia. Kazakhstan, as the largest recipient of EBRD investment in the region, continues to align itself with global energy efficiency and renewable energy trends.
