The National Directorate of Railway Transport (DNTF) held a railway operations workshop aimed at officials of the National Ports Administration (ANP), with the aim of strengthening coordination between both organizations and optimizing the circulation of trains between the Central Railway line and the port area.
The training was focused on the application of the โconnection passwordโ, the procedure that regulates communication between the DNTF and the ANP to guarantee the safe and efficient entry and exit of trains from the port.
This procedure is essential because the Central Railway line, under the jurisdiction of the DNTF, has a centralized rail traffic management system, while the internal roads of the port area, managed by the ANP, operate with a different modality and are not part of the DNTF Control Center.
This difference makes permanent coordination necessary between both institutions to ensure that trains enter only when the tracks are free and in safe conditions, avoiding unnecessary train stops, reducing delays and minimizing the effects on vehicular traffic at level crossings.
The workshop was taught by specialists from the DNTF, with the participation of the Railway Safety and Processes Area and the Circulation and Capacity Management Area. The Coordinating Unit, responsible for the management of the roads within the port area, participated on behalf of the ANP. The request was addressed to the personnel of both organizations who apply this procedure on a daily basis.
Although the โconnection commandโ is in force and allows the traffic of an average of ten trains per day to be managed, the experience accumulated in its application has made it possible to identify opportunities for improvement in operational coordination.
Within this framework, the workshop allowed the teams to exchange experiences, identify the main challenges detected during the operation and agree on actions to strengthen communication and make the entry and exit of trains from the port area more efficient.
