MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) -- While many spend hours online browsing social media, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is encouraging people to use their time for self-development through online courses. Kenneth T. Asuncion, provincial officer of DICT Misamis Occidental, said a variety of online learning options are available, including Coursera, Cisco, and DICTs own learning management system. Among gusto mahitabo is that all of us will invest a portion of our time para pud sa long-term development, he said. (What we want to happen is that all of us will invest a portion of our time in long-term development.) He added that social media can also generate income. Dili lang sa paghimo og content pero actually to sell products (Not just in making content but to sell products), Asuncion said. DICT-10 also launched LAKIP, or Localized Accessible Knowledge and Inclusive Platform, a learning platform for community members, from Grade 1 students to employed adults. The platform currently offers 26 ICT courses, ranging from basic computer and internet skills to specialized training such as social media marketing. On the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Asuncion described it as a tool that can speed up tasks. He said he uses AI for routine work but stressed that human supervision is still necessary. Importante kaayo na we use it to refine our work. Dili si AI ang pabuhaton nato sa work (We must use it to refine our work; we will not let AI do the work), he said. Asuncion also said many startups today are AI-powered, using tools for tasks such as facial recognition and handwriting detection. The government, he said, is integrating AI into services such as the eGov PH app, which provides access to digital IDs and other e-government services. Asuncion recommended ICT courses for students interested in the field, saying the digital era is the future and that the future has already begun. Asuncion added that while the country needs more ICT professionals, it is also important for them to explore other fields, including policy-making. He said future leaders should include those who can push technology forward to accelerate development. (JMOR/PIA-10/Misamis Occidental)
