π Tender Overview
DSB has received the first trainset of the new EC wagons, which will be part of the future train fleet in Denmark. EC stands for EuroCity, and the wagons will be the cornerstone of international train operations on routes from Copenhagen and Aarhus to Hamburg. In the future, travellers on these routes can look forward to modern, comfortable and more climate-friendly trains.
The first trainset has now arrived in Denmark, and DSB will in the near future work with train manufacturer Talgo to adjust the final details and carry out the final tests. The train is expected to be able to enter commercial operation in autumn 2024, once Talgo has received the final approvals.
"The reception of the first carriages is a milestone in the most comprehensive transformation of DSB's train fleet ever. In the coming years, the aging, primarily diesel-powered trainsets will be replaced by modern electric and more climate-friendly trains. With the high focus on comfort on international travel, we get a significantly more attractive product for the benefit of our customers, while at the same time creating a coherent public transport in Denmark and abroad," says CEO of DSB, Flemming Jensen.
In February 2020, DSB ordered eight EC trainsets, which in 2023 were doubled to 16 trainsets and 16 steering cars. The first eight trainsets will be delivered in 2024, while another eight trainsets and 16 steering cars will be delivered in 2026-2027. The EC train from Talgo has also been ordered and will be delivered to German Deutsche Bahn (DB). "It has been important for us to acquire a train type that is also delivered to other top operators to minimize the need for adjustments. It is an advantage that we at DSB can also make use of their experience as well," says Flemming Jensen.
Facts about DSB's purchase of trainsets, wagons and locomotives:
DSB is investing in a comprehensive renewal of our train fleet, which in the coming years will transform the primarily aging diesel-powered multiple units into modern electric and more climate-friendly trainsets and locomotives.
In addition to environmental benefits and better passenger comfort, fewer uniform and electric train types will provide increased operational stability and lower operating costs.
