Students from the Conservation and Agrarian-Rural Baccalaureates of PET Arrayanes visited the Rubio Maihlos Family property last Wednesday, July 15, near Pan de Azúcar in the Laguna del Sauce Basin, in Maldonado. The activity was developed within the framework of the Specific Territorial Intervention (ITE) project “Contributions to the comprehensive management of invasive exotic species (IAS) in the Native Forest”, contributing to the strengthening of a valuable inter-institutional work space that includes the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) and the Ministry of the Environment (MA).
The activity was developed within the framework of the Specific Territorial Intervention project “Contributions to the comprehensive management of invasive exotic species in the Native Forest” of the General Directorate of Rural Development of the MGAP.
The main objective of the day was to integrate technical and curricular knowledge with the productive and environmental reality of the area. Special emphasis was placed on two fundamental areas for sustainable rural development: environmental conservation and agricultural production, demonstrating the viability of combining a livestock system with the preservation of the ecosystem.
The property was transformed into an open classroom in which young people, teachers, technicians from public institutions could exchange experiences about the daily management of the establishment. About 40 participants of the day were able to visualize how conservation practices can coexist in a harmonious and synergistic way, with a livestock production system, addressing the relevance of the native forest and the problem of invasive exotic species.
At the beginning of the activity, producer Héctor Rubio presented the main characteristics of his breeding and rearing system on natural fields. He explained the reasons for his interest in participating in the ITE, highlighting the value of the process technologies used on the farm and the importance of continuous learning in agricultural management.
Subsequently, the field tour began. At first the Agr. Engineer. Andrés González, from the General Forestry Directorate (DGF-MGAP), contributed his experience on the values ??and ecosystem services of the native forest. Likewise, it provided key information on the Forest Registry, as well as the management and impacts of Invasive Exotic Species.
After sharing lunch on the banks of the Pan de Azúcar stream, the students presented their lines of work for the course and the follow-up and monitoring actions planned for the current school year on the property. At the same time, they began their practical tasks by surveying the species present in three IAS control plots implemented in the spring of 2025 on the property's riverside mountain.
Later, the MSc. Mariana Nin, representing the Environmental Quality Protection Division of the Ministry of the Environment, spoke about the water quality protection measures in the Laguna del Sauce basin that said organization is implementing.
The organizing team of the activity made reference to highlighting the enthusiasm, commitment and excellent work of students and teachers both in the preparatory stages of the day and during it. He also expresses his gratitude to the Rubio Maihlos family, who opened the doors of their establishment and actively participated throughout the day, transmitting first-hand their experience, knowledge and concerns to the young people.
