π Tender Overview
o MINEM promotes the approach of responsible mining, which contributes to economic and social growth in rural communities by generating productive synergiesWithin the framework of the III Mining Internship, developed by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) in our capital, 27 participants from the Apurimac region strengthened their theoretical training with a field visit to the Maria Teresa Mining Unit of Minera Colquisiri S.A., located in the district and province of Huaral, Lima.
The participants verified that the coexistence between mining and agriculture is a tangible reality in that place that, under a responsible mining approach, drives economic and social growth in rural communities by generating productive synergies.
In that sense, representatives of the mining company, by developing their presentations on environmental management and social responsibility actions and agro-mining approach implemented in the area, allowed the participants to comprehensively understand the mining operation and its relationship with the environment.
First, they toured the main facilities of the operation, such as the industrial wastewater treatment plant (PTARI), where the water recovered from the tailings dam is treated and reused for dust control, irrigation of forest fields and the metallurgical process, contributing to an operation with zero discharges.
Subsequently, they visited the El Nopal Farm, where large volumes of mandarins are produced annually and exported to the markets of Japan, the United States and European countries. This farm is located just 50 meters from the mining unit, without affecting the production or quality of the fruit.
The participants were able to see, directly, the harmonious coexistence between mining activity and local productive activities, such as the experience of the Jecuan Fruit Growers Association (ASOFRUJ), promoted through the project Jecuan Fruit Growers: Quality that Crosses Borders, promoted by Colquisiri through the Maria Teresa Civil Association.
This initiative has strengthened the association of small farmers in the area, improving their productive and management capacities, and facilitating their direct links with agro-export companies to access international markets.
Finally, it was reported that more than 5,000 families from 27 population centers in the districts of Chancay and Huaral benefit from both economic activities. For this initiative, Minera Colquisiri S.A. which produces copper, zinc, silver and lead, has achieved important certifications such as Global GAP, a standard that guarantees good agricultural practices in the world.
